Player Prop Line Movement: Does Betting Early Pay?

LFG Sports AI NFL player prop line movement odds comparison

Player prop line movement costs bettors money every week, and most of them never notice. You liked the over on a receiver’s yardage Tuesday. Then you waited until Sunday. The number went up two yards, and you bet it anyway.

We wanted to know what that wait actually costs. So we measured it.

What we measured

We pulled every main-line NFL yardage prop (passing, rushing and receiving) from Weeks 1 through 5 of the 2026 season: 79 games, priced at seven major sportsbooks (DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, theScore Bet, Fanatics, BetRivers and Hard Rock Bet). For each prop, we compared the first number a book posted with its last number before kickoff. Then we checked both against what the player actually did.

That left 1,373 player props with an opening line, a closing line and a real stat line. The typical opening number went up about 89 hours before kickoff, so think Wednesday or Thursday for a Sunday game.

Most lines move before kickoff

Seven out of ten yardage props moved. Quarterbacks moved the most, with 85% of passing yardage lines changing during the week. Receiving lines moved 70% of the time and rushing lines 65%.

The moves are small. Median shift: about two yards, with two and a half for passing and one and a half for receiving. Small sounds harmless, but on a prop, two yards is often the whole bet. Plenty of receivers finish within a couple yards of their number.

Player prop line movement follows real news

Here is the part that matters. When a line moved, the side it moved toward won 55% of the time, measured against the opening number. Measured against the closing number, that same side won only 52%.

In plain terms, the move was usually right. Injury news, a role change, weather, a backup getting the start: the market figured it out over the week. By kickoff, though, the new number had priced most of it in. At standard -110 pricing you need about 52.4% to break even, so the closing number was close to a coin flip.

Receiving yards showed the biggest gap, 58% at the open against 53% at the close. Rushing ran 51% and 48%, and passing ran 52% and 49%.

Lines that never moved told you nothing. The over hit 49% of the time on those.

What this means for your bets

Don’t read player prop line movement as a reason to always bet early. Nobody knows on Tuesday which way a line will go. If your read is wrong, the early number does not save you. That 55% only belongs to the side the market ended up agreeing with.

Here is what the data does say:

  1. The number you get matters. If you have a real read early in the week, waiting can cost you the better line, and over a season two yards at a time adds up.
  2. A move is information. When a line jumps, find out why before you bet into it. Usually somebody knows something.
  3. Check where the line opened. If it already moved toward your side, most of the value is gone. At that point you are not early anymore, you are betting the closing number.
  4. Compare books before you place it. Books adjust at different times, and one of them can still be sitting on the old number. Our line shopping breakdown showed how often the same bet carries a different price from book to book.
