Player Prop Unders: We Checked 2,144 NFL Props

LFG Sports AI NFL prop data player prop unders closing line hit rate

Player prop unders have a reputation. Ask around any group chat and someone will tell you the Under is where the smart money lives. The pitch makes sense on paper. Injuries, blowouts and game script can all shut a player down, but almost nothing pushes him way past his number.

So we checked. Not with a hunch, with the closing numbers.

What we measured

We pulled every NFL player prop for passing yards, rushing yards, receiving yards and receptions from Week 1 through Week 6 of this season, 93 games in all. For each prop we took the closing line, meaning the last price posted inside the six hours before kickoff. We kept only lines quoted by at least three of seven major US sportsbooks: DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, theScore Bet, Fanatics, BetRivers and Hard Rock Bet. Then we checked the box score.

Passing yards dropped out. Books rarely agreed on one number for quarterbacks, so only 48 passing props made the cut, which is too few to say anything. That left 2,144 props.

Player prop unders overall: barely better than a coin

Unders cashed 1,101 times out of 2,144. That is 51.4%.

It sounds like an edge. It is not. The average Under in this sample cost about -113, which means you need to win roughly 53% of the time just to break even. At 51.4%, betting every Under in sight loses money slowly and steadily.

The blanket rule fails the moment you add the price. That is the first lesson, and it applies to every “always bet X” rule you will ever hear.

Rushing yards: the one market that leaned

Rushing yards told a different story. Unders hit in 220 of 386 props, or 57%.

Here is why that happens. Rushing yards are lopsided. In most games, a running back lands somewhere near his number or a little short of it. Every so often he breaks a 60-yard run or gets 28 carries in a blowout, and that one game drags his average way up. The line sits close to that average, while the typical game finishes below it. In our sample, the median rusher finished 1.5 yards under his line, even though the average finished slightly over.

Average and typical are not the same number. Books know it. Most bettors never think about it.

Still, six weeks is six weeks. That 57% is a pattern worth checking against each player, not a rule to bet blind.

Receptions and receiving yards: true coin flips

Receiving yards split almost dead even, with unders winning 367 of 732 (50.1%). Receptions landed at 50.6%, or 495 of 978.

There is a catch on receptions. On average, books priced the Under a little higher than the Over. In other words, the side people lean toward is the side that costs more, and a coin flip at a worse price is a losing bet.

What this means for your next prop

Player prop unders are not a system. The data says three things.

First, the price decides more than the side. An Under at -105 and the same Under at -125 are different bets, and only one of them has a shot over a season. We showed how much a price can shift before kickoff in our breakdown of player prop line movement.

Second, market type matters. Yardage props with long-tail upside, like rushing, behave differently from count props like receptions.

Third, the player matters most. A back who splits carries in a pass-heavy offense is a different prop from a workhorse on a run-first team, even at the same number.

How LFG Sports AI helps you check the number

LFG Sports AI shows how often a player cleared a line over his last 5, 10 and 20 games plus the season, so you can see whether his misses cluster under the number before you bet. The odds board puts prices from your books side by side with the best number highlighted, so you never pay -125 for an Under you could get at -105. Sync your sportsbooks and every prop you place lands in one record, which tells you whether your own Unders are actually winning.

None of it picks a side for you. It shows you the number, the history and the price, and the call stays yours.
